As to damage types, I believe the dev's statement was "If the domi won't use the other types, who will ?"
Believe it or not - but each and every level 2 mission can be won by an otherwise unarmed (including NOS!) 'rax when you have 5x Hammerhead I's and drone interfacing at level 3 / 4.
It's a common mistake to underestimate drones. For me they are an "I win" button in PvE.

Actually thats the Raven, Domi is about 4th on the list.
I would have thought the most flown ship was something like the Ibis.

<hijack> Really? Genuinely curious, how do you handle the multi-wave missions? I'd have thought that they'd kill your drones over a few spawns. </hijack>
1. Call them back as soon as the wave arrives, let the enemies aggress you and get the drones out again.
But: for some reason it happens extremely rare to me that the drones get aggressed in any way. And if they are I have plenty of time to recall them so they can regenerate shields. Played for about 13k worth of LP level 2 missions with one set of Hammerhead I's and have lost not a single one. Didn't even get one of them into structure.
2. Avoid long range fights - takes too long to loot and endangers the drones.
In fact my 'rax only has 2x 250mm rails fitted for the destruction of something that happens to be at about 20 - 27 km away when I start. Most of the time even they are offline. I consider going for shield tanking again with 2x med. shield booster II with a cap recharger or whatever instead of the guns.
Only mission I need my guns more is part 5 of "human cattle". But even that is a walk in the park when you draw that damn Moa out of the roids.
